The Inventive | James Marshall

Founder & Creative Director

The Inventive was founded by curator, journalist and cultural strategist James Marshall as a multidisciplinary creative practice working across the contemporary arts. Built on the belief that strong cultural projects require more than communications alone, The Inventive brings together curatorial thinking, strategic consultancy, editorial expertise and digital storytelling to support artists, galleries, institutions and brands.

Drawing on a background spanning exhibition curation, arts journalism and content creation, Marshall established The Inventive to bridge the spaces between organisations, the contemporary art world and wider public audiences. This cross-disciplinary approach enables the studio to develop projects from concept through to public engagement, whether shaping an exhibition narrative, managing an artist's long-term strategy, delivering communications campaigns or producing original cultural content.

Working across the commercial gallery sector, public institutions and independent cultural initiatives, The Inventive has developed a reputation for combining critical understanding with accessible storytelling. Rather than treating communications as an afterthought, the studio integrates strategy, narrative and audience development from the earliest stages of a project, ensuring artists and organisations are positioned with clarity, authenticity and long-term impact.

Today, The Inventive collaborates with leading contemporary artists, galleries, museums and cultural organisations across the UK and internationally, helping ambitious creative projects find meaningful audiences through thoughtful strategy, editorial insight and innovative cultural programming.
